You should have given us a 3rd choice, which is obviously "both".
That reminds me of most political surveys. They ask questions that are meaningless because they are polarized and worded such that the real meaningful information doesn't get counted.

Sorry we are having this dumb debate at the office and thought we would get some opinions. I say a nice watch is like nice shoes, sure people buy them because the look good but that doesn't make it jewelry. I define jewelry as something that has no purpose other than to be seen. ;) |

Some watches are functional tools. Others are just jewelry. If you have trouble finding the dial inside all the diamonds and such, you probably have a piece of jewelry. If it doesn't keep good time and it doesn't matter that it doesn't keep good time, than it is jewelry. Some ladies pendant watches, for example, are just vehicles for displaying jewels. A Breitling avaition watch, on the other hand, is almost all function. |

reminds me of a story, when I was working at Manny's in NYC one of my customers was one of the Brooks brothers guys. He would buy $10,000 Martins, Gibsons etc. One day he came in and said "Evan, see this watch" I said,"yeah". He said "It cost $18,000" I said "Wow! What time is it?" He said "3:15" I said "Holy smokes Tom thats what I have too!" We laughed for about 10 minutes after a long awkward pause. I love watches though and view them as funtional as time is immutable. Expensive watches are not so much about being jewelry as they are about making a statement. Like a Mont Blanc fountain pen, tailored suits, handcrafted Italian shoes, and a Mercedes CL55. They state "look at me, I'm successful (and you're not)". My $15 WalMart special is definitely not jewelry, but it keeps just as good time as a Rolex -- and better time than my wife's Movado. Plus, I won't ever have to worry about getting mugged for it some dark, lonely night. Best, Michael |

It just depends on how you define jerelery. Some watches are meant to be an adornment and some are strictly utilitarian. So the answer is: yes and/or no. It can be but not necessarily. Ron |

I see it like a nice pen. Something nice and expensive but ultimately has a purpose. I consider a watch to be a similar product to jewelry... but not jewelry just like a nice belt isn't. But anyway it really doesn’t matter! ;) |

I have a watch that tells me the day, date, month, and moonphase. It's hand made by Blancpain, which has never made an electronic watch. It's very expensive, but no one ever notices it, which is the way I like it. No way is it jewelry. |

Bah! watches is jewelry plain and simple. They don't have a function for me cause everything has a clock now days, your phone, your video, you microwave, your car etc etc putting another one on your wrist is just jewelry. Cheers (anyone got the time?) Kim |

Kim brings up a good point! There's a clock in my car, on my computer, on the wall of my office...in short, everywhere I go, there's a clock so I can know what time it is. So why wear a watch at all? For me, I'm so used to having one on my wrist, that I feel strange without it. Almost like walking around without pants on. Well, almost.

Watches.....We don't need no stinkin' watches. Seeing as have time revovlves around me, I don't need a watch, the watch needs me  
I'd say for the average consumer, a watch is not jewelry, an accessory? maybe, maybe not. A tool most likly. You guys are right though that there is a clock almost everywhere you look, so a watch certainly has a lot of competition. I guess it all depends on the activity to. Any sports activity is nice to have a watch with some sporty functions. In the shop, I don't want a clock
